It is with pride that the Berne Union Music Boosters Announce the Sugar Grove Stars & Stripes Parade 2018 Grand Marshal - Mrs. Dora Jo Kern.
Mrs. Dora Jo Kern is a 1980 BU graduate and has been married to Dave Kern for 25 years. Together, they have 3 children who have all attended Berne Union. Chelsea, Class of 2005. Ian Class of 2007. And Rich, Class of 2014. She has been a lifelong resident of Berne Township. She first volunteered for the school district in 1996 during the building of Rocket Land when Rich was only months old.
Among her volunteer work includes, but is not limited to: being a classroom helper for years, Ohio Reads volunteer, decorating for Berne Union’s Veteran’s Day Program, supporting the Athletic Boosters by working concessions and volunteering at track meets, volunteering at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, donating countless items to the school, organizing Light Up Sugar Grove during the Fourth of July, decorating Mrs. McGrady’s retirement party, volunteering many times to work in the Millersport Sweetcorn Festival, working for the Athletic Boosters at the Fair Booth, various PTO functions, and organizing a fundraiser along with other parents for Bradley Rhinesmith afer his untimely passing, and of course, anything and everything related to the Music Boosters.
In her time as a volunteer for the music boosters, Dora Jo has donated her time, effort, money, energy, and ideas well past the graduation of her youngest child. Dora Jo has chaperoned Wind Ensemble trips to Chicago and Saint Louis, helped to host countless Superior Parties for the Marching Band, cleaned and organized the Guard Room, helped other mother’s with the Marching Band uniforms. She has worked many different jobs at Showboat and worked in concessions for both Basketball and Track. She was in charge of decorating for the end of the year Music Awards Banquet for many years. Dora Jo has also volunteered for many different jobs at OMEA State Finals.
Helping with the Stars and Stripes Festival nearly became a part time job for her every year. At the Festival, Dora Jo has pulled countless pounds of chicken, been in charge of parking, the basket auction, and vendors. She also brought the monkey a few years back! Her favorite things that she has accomplished over the years was to bring back Bobby Bike to be in the parade, brought back a former BU student Kevin Brode to play bagpipes in the parade, and the time she decorated nearly 100 pumpkins to line the parking lot to welcome the marching band came back from a competition during Halloween. Thank you, Sharp Farms, for the donation!
Dora Jo has donated countless items over the years to the school and specifically to the Music Boosters. Including metal racks and shelving units for classrooms, paper, exercise balls, cups, a freezer, neck ties, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottles, socks, Christmas Trees, a bulletin board, make- up for the show choir, and so much more. But her favorite donation was a cardboard school bus with working lights to welcome elementary students.
Dora Jo loves volunteering and working with the school. She says it is very rewarding in all aspects. She would like to say that she believes everyone has something they can give. Their time, their talent, and their abilities. Your time is more valuable than your money. Dora Jo has worked at Kroger for 38 years and the company has been very supportive of her efforts to avoid allowing useful items to become trash. And that ends up being a win for Berne Union. She wants to remind everyone to look at home or at work for things you no longer use and remember that the school may very well find a use for them. It encourages the children when they see adults donating their time and effort to their school. And, there is nothing better than helping a child.
Congratulations Dora Jo Kern. You deserve this honor and we are proud to have you as our 2018 Sugar Grove Stars & Stripes Parade Grand Marshal on June 30th at Noon.
